Facebook Facts and Fiction
Facebook is the whale in the social networking sea! Offering users the chance to build extensive networks, post photos, find other like-minded people and even create discussion groups. It’s a leader in social networking with over 200 million users recorded at the beginning of 2010. It was primarily developed as a way of communicating through personal networks. However, it is now used by millions of businesses to strengthen their exposure and attract new clients.
Despite this impressive description, Facebook is not for everyone. I would state that for those businesses such as arts organisations, groups, clubs and any company that involves social activities, it is a fantastic platform from which to develop interests and interact with those likely to be interested in your product.
Having worked for a couple of years with a holistic holiday company, I found Facebook to be extremely useful in maintaining customer interest. Many visitors wanted to keep in contact with the people they met on holiday whilst away from the centre (and even started up holistic groups of their own in their home towns). Starting up a group on Facebook kept people thinking about the centre, encouraged introduction via word of mouth, and over time significantly helped to increase traffic.
For others who are more static in their business needs, Facebook may not be the right business medium. Don’t assume that just because something is popular that it will therefore be good for your business. Keep your eyes open, investigate your options and ensure you are spending your time on activities that have strong direct potential.
